It's truly a scary time right now. Please be assured that we are taking all precautionary measures against COVID-19 while continuing to provide flowers for our community. Here's what we are doing at our farm. All flowers and vegetables are only handled ever by one person - the main operator & owner of R&R Secret Farm, Rita O'Brien. The farm operation is a one-woman show. I am a bonavide clean freak and I used to be a certified USDA GAP (good agriculture practices) inspector, meaning that I used to go to farms and audit them on their farm food safety practices. I also used to help farms write farm food safety plans. On my farm, I take this pandemic very seriously. I do not want to be the reason that anyone gets sick even though I don't have any symptoms. Beyond my regular OCD cleaning, I am cleaning & sanitizing all surfaces that come into contact with the flowers or anything that I touch while I'm working with flowers (cooler door, fence latch, etc.). I'm thoroughly washing my hands and not touching my face, clothes, or hair with my hands (or I wash them again). I am washing my hands before harvesting flowers and before putting together bunches. My phone gets sterilized multiple times per day. My car's steering wheel, touchscreens, and door handles are regularly sterilized when I'm making doorstep deliveries and I wear gloves when knocking on doors (a quick knock and then run back to my car - I don't have time to linger anyway). I'm not coming into close contact with anyone but my husband (we farmers are already pretty good at social distancing).
I hope to continue to deliver our gorgeous flowers to doorsteps for as long as we are able. Our flowers are really into bloom now - and we could use your support - our spring sales are what really helps keep this operation afloat after a low sale winter. Among other items in our webstore, we have our Hope Blooms Bouquet Subscriptions and our R&R Spring Bouquets - all with free doorstep delivery to folks in the Athens area. If you're unsure about whether your doorstep makes the cut, please send me a message. Thank you for reading this and thank you for your support!
R&R Secret Farm's Key Farm Safety Protocols: The farm's fields and coolers and pack area are closed to the public. The public is EVERYONE except R&R Secret Farm staff who have been fully trained on correct protocols. As this is a one-woman operation, it seems strange to write this out, but in this instance, Robert and I are farm staff members.
Training includes the following:
List of CDC guidelines of symptoms of when to not come to work (no exceptions)
Proper & regular handwashing practices (when first arriving to the farm, after bathroom use, after eating, after drinking, after sneezing/coughing, when dirty, after cleaning other surfaces, before harvesting/handling flowers & food, etc.).
No touching clothes, face, hair, cell phone with hands when working with flowers or food (harvesting/washing/bunching/packing) - or re-wash hands.
Cell phone is santized regularly thoughout the day.
Gloves alone or hand sanitizer alone do not take the place of proper handwashing.
Cleaning & sanitizing all flower and food contact surfaces (tables, harvest containers, shelves) daily and as needed throughout the day.
Cleaning and sanitizing all handles (cooler door, doorknobs, fence latches, faucets, light switches, car's steering wheel & touchscreen, etc.) daily and as needed throughout the day.
Cleaning & sanitizing all harvesting tools & handles (snips, etc.) daily and as needed throughout the day.
Avoid open-mouth breathing while harvesting or handling flowers and food.
